Your journey begins as you depart from Chandigarh early in the morning, heading toward the foothills of the Himalayas. As you ascend, the air cools, and the landscape shifts from plains to winding mountain roads. Around midday, you’ll take a break in Shimla, where the colonial charm of this hill station meets the crisp mountain air. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local café, perhaps with a view of the snow-dusted surroundings.
From Shimla, the route takes you higher, passing through Narkanda, a picturesque town known for its apple orchards and scenic views. As the sun begins to set, you arrive at Rampur, a quaint town nestled along the Sutlej River.
After checking into your hotel, relax and soak in the tranquillity of the surrounding mountains before settling in for the night.
After an early breakfast, you embark on one of the most exhilarating days of your journey. Today, you’ll enter the majestic Spiti Valley. As the road winds along the banks of the Sutlej River, you’re greeted by towering cliffs and dramatic landscapes that only grow more rugged as you ascend.
Your first major stop is at Nako Lake, a serene, frozen mirror amidst the snow-covered mountains. Stroll around the lake, taking in the stillness and beauty of this high-altitude gem. From here, continue deeper into the valley, passing the confluence of the Spiti and Sutlej Rivers, where the contrasting colors of the waters are a photographer’s dream.
Wake up to the ethereal stillness of the valley, with snow-clad peaks glowing in the morning light. After breakfast, your day of exploration begins with a visit to the iconic Key Monastery, perched on a hill with panoramic views of the valley below. This centuries-old monastery is a spiritual center, and in the quiet of winter, the atmosphere is even more serene.
From Key, head to Kibber Village, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. The snow-covered rooftops and narrow lanes make it feel like a postcard from a bygone era. Nearby, the Chichum Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Asia, offers stunning views of the surrounding gorges.
After lunch, continue to Langza Village, home to a giant Buddha statue that gazes protectively over the valley. This is also a fossil-hunter’s paradise, where remnants of Spiti’s ancient marine past can be found embedded in the rock. Then, venture to Komic, the highest motorable village, where the air is thin but the views are endless. Finally, visit Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office, where you can send postcards to friends and family from this remote corner of the world.
Today, you leave the rugged beauty of Spiti behind and begin the journey toward the lush Sangla Valley. As you descend from the high-altitude desert, the landscape changes dramatically from barren mountains to verdant, snow-covered forests and terraced fields. The drive is a sensory feast, with each turn offering a new, breathtaking vista.
Upon arrival in Sangla, the valley’s green and white contrast with the raw beauty of Spiti is striking. You’ll be staying in a charming homestay, where the hospitality is as warm as the environment outside is cold. The night will be spent wrapped in blankets, savoring local cuisine in the cozy warmth of the homestay.
This morning, you explore Chitkul, the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border. In winter, Chitkul is like a winter wonderland, with snow-laden trees and frozen rivers. Walk through the village, feeling the peace of a place where time seems to stand still, and look out toward the snow-clad peaks that mark the edge of India.
After exploring Chitkul, you’ll begin your return journey toward Shimla or Fagu. The drive takes you through the heart of the Sangla Valley, with its dramatic gorges and towering cliffs. As evening falls, you arrive at Shimla or the quieter Fagu, where you’ll stay the night in a comfortable hotel, enjoying the warmth and comfort after several days in the wilderness.
After a leisurely breakfast, your final leg of the journey begins as you descend from the hills back to the plains. The transition from the snow-clad mountains to the warmer lowlands is gradual, allowing you to savor the beauty of the Himalayas one last time. As you reach Chandigarh, the memories of your journey through Spiti’s winter wonderland will stay fresh in your mind.
Your tour ends with a final morning in Chandigarh.
Reflect on the adventure and the lifetime of memories you’ve made in the heart of one of the most remote and beautiful regions in the world.
Tip: You might spend the day exploring Chandigarh's gardens and museums or simply relaxing after an unforgettable journey.
